history
FOUNDERS
First formed in 1963 with Vi Cormier, Honey Kolanko and Donna Mason being the founders with the help of the first Executive. The Executive included Fran Jarvis, Joyce Smith, Jean Powell, Lois Patterson and Ann Cunik along with the help of Club Professional Jacqueline Barns.
FIRST SHOW
The show was held March 28 1964 with 85 members taking part.
SANCTION
After 3 years of operation the club was sponsored by the Brant and Woodstock skating clubs for membership in the CFSA in Ottawa. Our local club received their sanction that year.
GROWTH
The club started out with 2 hours of ice time per week and now makes use of 13 hours per week. The first CFSA tests were held in 1966 with 4 preliminary tests passed in 2 test days. Now we have 4 test days. We have students passing preliminary through to Gold tests.
PRIVATE LESSONS
The first year of operation the club required one Professional Coach. Today we have six Professional Coaches on staff to teach both private and group lessons to help skaters achieve their goals for competitions and tests.
PRECISION
In 1978 a Precision team was formed for skaters who did not want to compete as individuals. Four years later there were not enough skaters at the same level to form a team. It was tried again in 2000 but has not followed through to today.
POWER SKATING
Our first CanPower Skate program was offered in the 1997 season to be coached by our Club Pro Glen Hayhurst and still continues today. It has grown in popularity today with Hockey and Ringette players to necessitate an assistant for Glen, his brother Rod Hayhurst.
INCORPORATED
On the advice of club lawyers, the club became a corporation in the 1977/78 season.
